We deliver the Cambridge Upper Secondary curriculum for all subjects in Stages 10 and 11. This programme builds on the foundations of Cambridge Lower Secondary and prepares students for Cambridge IGCSE, the world’s most popular examination. It also prepares learners for Cambridge Advanced and for progression to other educational systems.
The two-year programme uses a learner-centred and enquiry-based approach to learning. It has been designed specifically for an international student body and develops learners’ knowledge, understanding and skills in:
- Subject content,
- applying knowledge and understanding to new as well as familiar situations,
- intellectual enquiry,
- flexibility and responsiveness to change,
- working and communicating in English,
- influencing outcomes,
- cultural awareness.
At Mayfair International Academy, we review the subjects that we offer at Upper Secondary level each year. We encourage all of our students to work towards achieving the ICE award, in addition to their individual IGCSE qualifications, and therefore recommend that all learners select a minimum of seven subjects, with at least one from each of the subject areas. The subjects we are offering for the 2018-2019 academic year are listed below*.
English Language and Literature
Cambridge IGCSE English syllabuses are available to learners whose first language is English and for those with good English skills, but who are not native speakers. The syllabuses develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively in both speech and writing, for study and employment. All students must study either First Language or Second Language English.
- English – First Language
- English – Second Language
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is an essential subject for all learners and one of our obligatory subjects at this level. This syllabus encourages the development of mathematical knowledge as a key life skill, and as a basis for more advanced study.
Students learn how science is studied and practised, and become aware that the results of scientific research can have both good and bad effects on individuals, communities and the environment. All students must select one Science option at Upper Secondary level.
- Science – Co-ordinated (double award)
Learners are encouraged to enjoy and appreciate the variety of language, and to understand and respond appropriately to what they read and hear.
- First Language Spanish
- Second Language Spanish
- Second Language French
Humanities and Social Sciences
The study of Cambridge IGCSE humanities and social sciences subjects enables leaners to gain a deeper insight into the different communities and cultures that exist around the world.
- Global Perspectives
Creative and Professional
These Cambridge IGCSE subjects introduce learners to the theory and concepts that underpin the subjects as well as providing a good opportunity to engage with the subject practically. The syllabuses provide both a solid foundation for further study at Cambridge International A Level, and an ideal preparation for the world of work and other studies.
- Art and Design
- Business Studies
- Computer Science
- Information and Communication Technology
- Physical Education
* Please note, a minimum number of students per subject will be required in order for the courses to run.
